John Mason MA MEd APIOL

Mere Mountains was set up by Elspeth in 1991, and is owned and run by John and Elspeth Mason, who have been providing recreational outdoor activities and outdoor education courses in the Lakes continiously for nearly 20 years. The organisation is constantly developing  we are currently seeking a new office manager to manage the ever increasing office administration. Vicky Whibley is full time doing a mixture of admin and tutoring with associates Chris Binks providing IT support and Web design and Jac Young lending us her book-keeping skills. For those who like jumping off waterfalls and squirming underground  Steve Gray continues as our chief adventure sports instuctor.

We have an AALA License covering a wide range of adventurous activities including climbing, mountaineering, caving and watersports. For Outdoor Education and Training Programmes requiring additional staff we have an established network of experienced tutors who are inducted in our systems and whose competence conforms to AALA requirements. With such a wide range of courses on offer, we have some staff who specialise in schools courses and others who are management trainers or technical skills people. We have an established network of very highly qualified instructors, this enables us to ensure we always have people with the right skills for each type of activity or group.

We run an extensive programme of professional development courses in the quieter months, including Mountain Leader, Walking Group Leader, Single Pitch Award Courses and a range of First Aid Qualifications including 6hr Appointed persons, 16hr Outdoor, and First Aid at Work courses (We have HSE approval for First Aid at Work as Casualty Care First Aid Training)

We operate mainly from venues in the South Lakes area (Cumbria) and have use of a permanent waterfront base on Lake Windermere. For specific activities and programmes we use venues in the Yorkshire Dales or North Lancashire, and can arrange  self-catering, YHA or B&B accommodation.

We have run courses based in : Ambleside, Arnside, Bowness, Coniston, Hawkshead, Ingleton, Kendal, Newby Bridge, Ulverston, Windermere

Our Ethos

Quality outdoor experinces and events, run by experienced tutors and instructors, in stunningly scenic locations, at fair and affordable prices.

Our philosophy... What goes around comes around.

We believe that providing specially tailored courses that meet peoples needs, operate sensitively and sustainably in the local environment and provide longterm support for the local economy and jobs is the most responsible and rewarding way to run a business in the Lake District National Park.

We work with a wide range of organisations to deliver the courses they want, and use are local knowledge and extensive outdoor experience to ensure these work in harmony with the environment as much as possible. However groups of all ages and sizes tend to leave their mark on the natural enviornment, we try to use sites where we will have a minimum inpact and help to show people how to minimise their footprint on the wilderness.
