Mere Mountains is approved by Mountain Training to provide the Mountain Leader and Rock Climbing Instructor qualifications

The Mountain Leader is designed for people who want to lead groups in the mountainous areas of the UK and Ireland in summer conditions. For more information about the award see the Mountain training website page here -

The Rock Climbing Instructor enables experienced rock climbers to instruct climbing on single pitch crags and artificial climbing walls/towers. For more information about the award see the Mountain training website page here -

Residential courses are based at Humphrey Head Outdoor Centre in the South Lakes. We also have a training room here for non-residential courses.


Mountain Leader courses use a range of hill and mountain areas within close proximity to the base. Rock Climbing Instructor venues are within easy reach of several climbing walls and a range of single pitch crags with a variety of rock types.ML Pre-assessment or Reassessment (1-2 days) Available by arrangment with experienced ML assessor John Mason.  Please call  015395 35030 or email

Casualty Care Logo    Casualty Care First Aid Training  


  • First Care Sport and Activity Leader (8hr) (L2 on the IOL OFA framework)

  • First Care plus for Outdoor Environments including EFAW (16hr)  and for Remote Outdoor Environments (16hr level 4 for expereinced first aiders)

  • First Care plus with Paediatric for Outdoor Environments 12hrs or 16hrs with EFAW included

  • Emergency First Aid at Work (6hr) 

  • First Aid at Work (18hr) FAW plus AED requalification and annual refreshers

All trainers are experienced outdoor leaders (APIOL) and have a background in Mountain Rescue and outdoor first aid. All our 16hr courses are suitable for NGB and AALA needs, and are reported as being at a slightly higher standard than REC/ITC. Access to level 4 courses is only for people with sufficient previous expereince. First Aid at Work courses with an outdoor element are also suitable for this plus for Horse Riding Instructors.  The 8hr course is sufficient for RYA and Scout requirements. Shorter courses are for people working close to assistance.
